Driving in Japan: Required Documents by Country
General Rule
To drive in Japan, you must have one of the following:
• An International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention, or
• A valid driver’s license from specific countries, together with an official Japanese translation.
You must also carry your passport at all times.
1. Countries under the 1949 Geneva Convention
Drivers from these countries/regions can use an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention in Japan.

・Passport - Important:
Only the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is valid. Permits under the 1968 Vienna Convention cannot be used in Japan.

- Do I need to return the car with a full tank of fuel?
- Yes. Please return the car with a full tank of fuel. You will receive the car fully fueled, and we kindly ask you to refuel before returning it. If not, refueling charges will apply.
- Are child seats or baby seats available?
- Yes. Child seats and baby seats are available upon request when booking. Please let us know your child’s age and size in advance.
- What payment methods are accepted?
- We accept major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, AMEX) and PayPal. Payment is required at the time of booking.
- What is your cancellation policy?
- Cancellations made up to 48 hours before the rental date are free of charge. Cancellations within 48 hours may incur a fee. Please check the full policy when booking.
