Driving in Japan: Required Documents by Country
General Rule
To drive in Japan, you must have one of the following:
• An International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention, or
• A valid driver’s license from specific countries, together with an official Japanese translation.
You must also carry your passport at all times.
1. Countries under the 1949 Geneva Convention
Drivers from these countries/regions can use an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on the 1949 Geneva Convention in Japan.

Only the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is valid. Permits under the 1968 Vienna Convention cannot be used in Japan.

- What payment methods are accepted?
